Postdoctoral Opportunities

We intend to hire several postdoctoral research fellows for a two-year Mitacs Elevate appointment as part of a research collaboration with Rogers Communications, BCAA, EasyMile and the UBC Radio Science Lab / AURORA Connected Vehicle Testbed.

Job Description

The Clean, Connected and Safe Transportation Testbed (CCSTT) that is currently being deployed at the UBC is a city-scale living laboratory linking transportation, energy, information and communications technology to urban design. With major support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund, the testbed aims to transform transportation systems from a collection of passive, distinct entities into a highly coordinated network of people and technologies.

Rogers Communications, BCAA and EasyMile will support investigation of 5G Wireless performance and applications at UBC, possibly in a Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) environment. The CCSTT will be an outstanding platform for demonstrating and assessing the performance of several key 5G network services including Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) using either handsets or fixed terminals, Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (URLLC), which includes industrial applications and connected or autonomous vehicles, and Massive Machine Type Communications (MMTC), which includes the Internet of Things and wireless sensors, in realistic and representative urban-scale operating environments. The formal governance structure of the CCSTT will allow it to function as an effective interface between Rogers Communications and individual researchers or research groups, and provide a model for expanding access to the 5G infrastructure for research purposes to other campus users or projects.

Work Environment

The candidate will work in the Radio Science Lab (RSL) at the ECE department in UBC. RSL conducts a variety of state of the art wireless research projects with support from industry sponsors, standards groups and government funding agencies. Our well-equipped antennas and propagation lab allows us to conduct high performance measurements. The AURORA Connected Vehicle/Smart Transportation Testbed is located in the south east portion of the campus and includes a network operations centre, a mobile base station, five intersections equipped with roadside units (RSUs), traffic cameras, software-defined radios, and a smart traffic signal controller, three transportable roadside units (RSUs), and two drive test vehicles.

Job Requirements

We are looking for self-motivated candidates with a suitable background in wireless communications with a focus on 5G wireless and vehicular communications. Strong mathematical and communication (both oral and writing) skills are essential. Experience in proposal writing is desirable.

Application

Interested candidates should send their CV, list of publications, research statement, 3 references and all degree transcripts (in English) to davem@ece.ubc.ca no later than 15 Sep 2019.

Please disseminate to appropriate candidates and colleagues.
